Adventure Awaits Us At Home

Valentine’s Decorations & Date Night

Short Story

Happy Valentine’s Day! Well, really who cares about Valentine’s Day? For as long as I can remember, that was always how I looked at this “holiday.” But 11 years ago that changed. Ok, maybe not overnight.  But because of meeting my husband then, over time I came to at least acknowledge it. That is not to say we make a big deal out of it, because we don’t. We just try to not depend on holidays to tell us when we should be loving and caring, have date nights, do nice things for each other, etc. In fact, I still do not like to go out on Valentine’s Day or on the weekend that it is observed. Particularly restaurants advertising for Valentine’s Day.  No thank you! It is just so overrated, crowded and noisy.  Usually, I prefer to just make a nice meal at home.

Having said that, anyone that knows me or has been here before knows that 2020 was a new beginning for us with themes and decorations. This was also the case for a good part of 2021 as well. Things still were not back to normal, and we were still spending a lot of time at home when February came around. So, since the house had been decorated in some way or another since April of 2020, can you guess what happened?

Surprise, I decorated for Valentine's Day!

But, I have never in my life decorated for Valentine’s Day. So because I did not know how long my decorating obsession would continue, I did not want to spend a lot of money. So off to the dollar store I went. Previously, I had not spent a lot of time there. However, Valentine’s Day shopping was the beginning of many trips throughout 2021. The total was about $30 there, and I spread things out in three rooms to make it festive.  Plus, there are a few of items we had that I mixed in. Decorations

Breakfast Room

By day

This is our first ever tree that was decorated for a holiday other than Christmas! You can see all of Our DIY Decorated Trees for All Occasions here. The little hearts were part of the larger hearts you can see hanging in the archway and in the family room. I just cut them out since they worked well in the tree. In addition, it has red, pink and white Christmas balls with a pink ribbon.

At Christmas I made a cute center piece with wine glasses. This is another version for Valentine’s Day. Here is a Amazon link for a similar mirror. Then I added more hearts and heart necklaces, again, from the dollar store. I love candles so I added these votive candles to the top. The heart shaped dishes are from our wedding, so I pulled them out and added these pink floating candles.

The spiral ribbons were made with ribbon we had in our supply and the red glitter Love You sign on the wall is another dollar store find.

The heart pillow was my “splurge” purchase but it was just too cute not to buy it! I found it at one of our local home stores. But here is a similar pink heart pillow from Amazon.

By night

The fairy lights were put up at Christmas.  The colors can be changed, so they worked out perfectly for Valentine’s Day too!

The other decorations are cherubs (or Cupids!) and harps from our Christmas decorations. In addition, you see bows that I made from dollar store ribbon.

Candles always add to the look, and we love the candlelight ambience. Here’s an Amazon link for Yankee candles.

Family Room

By day

All of the Valentine’s decorations in this room are from the dollar store, except the pillow.  I thought the wooden XOXO and Love signs were so cute.  Signs like this at other stores are much more expensive. I thought they were a great find.  Of course a crafty person would paint them. But for me, these are just fine! In addition, on top of the mantle are red, pink and white Christmas balls.

By night

The lights on our windows (yep on the inside) and on the stairs were put up for Christmas, so I left them up to add to the ambience. And of course, more candles!

Kitchen

Day & Night

The large vase is filled with red and pink Christmas balls and accented with dollar store roses. And the small vase is filled with dollar store roses pulled from the stems. Then more cupids and more candles!

Did I go a little overboard on the decorations?  What do you think?

Dinner & Dessert

As I mentioned, normally I make a nice meal for Valentine’s Day. But, since we were eating home more than not and had generally been on some sort of diet most of the time, we decided to take the night off and have comfort food! Our dinner was from the best cheesesteak place in our city. Ok, so the real reason is that we had a gift card to a place that shipped from all sorts of places that I never heard of. Then, I happened upon the cheesesteak place on that site and thought we would try it. It was delicious and no clean up!

For Our First Christmas at Home, I made a Hungarian nut roll for one of our desserts. It was a large portion, and I froze most of it so that we didn’t waste it (and so that we didn’t keep eating it at the time!). I took that out and formed using these large heart shaped cookie cutters. They tasted just as good as fresh, and no baking required for this occasion!

Love

Our babies

One being a good boy and posing and one being such a good helper as the decorations were being put away!

  1. This is so sweet. I really like that you embraced “Love Day” like this by decorating and enjoying a special meal together. My husband and I enjoy special moments every day… we don’t need a “holiday” to say I love you. ❤️

  2. Beautiful decorations as always!! The decorations are simple but so cute! I didn’t realize you had a cat! He or she seems to love the decorations too!

  3. I love how you’ve decorated for Valentine’s Day. I put some bits out at Halloween and then Christmas and that’s about it, but I’d love to change things up for the season/ holidays x

  4. I love celebrating love. Thanks for sharing all these great ideas with me. Now, I am ready to decorate my house.

  5. I very much love the wine glass candles decorations and the red light. Valentines themed banner in the family room are great add on for a quick decor layout for the room. Your concepts were well thought out for each room.

  6. Brilliant ideas, and I love that Dollar Tree makes it so affordable to decorate when you feel like you want to. We agree, Valentine’s Day should NOT be the only time you think about showing love, but it is a great excuse to enjoy hearts and bright colors in the winter. 🙂 Great post.

  7. I love how you decorate your house for Valentine’s Day. It’s amazingly beautiful! My husband and I are planning to spend Valentine’s day at home for safety reasons. Love it!

  8. I love your style. You decorate and celebrate everything. I never decorated for Valentine’s Day; the tree is a unique twist on things. Very creative, love it. Sidenote: that dollar store, though, cannot be beaten.

  9. Oh I love this! The little valentine’s tree is such a cute idea! The room looks so cozy at night too…love the atmosphere you created.

  10. Being a mom is so hard. I’ve spent all day researching cute valentine’s day projects to do with my kids, and totally neglected my husband! Thank you so much for the poignant reminder!

  11. Your Valentine’s Day decorations are adorable! I love how you decorated each room in your house. We made heart suncatchers out of watercolored coffee filters and cardstock heart outlines. We put them on the window and they really brighten the room!

  12. Awww! This is really nice. I would love to decorate as well. It may be a bit late for this year but I will definitely do this next year. Thank you for the inspiration.

  13. Thank you all so much for the sweet and thoughtful comments. I am happy to hear that this helped inspire many of you! It was fun to do and a nice change of scenery. Happy Valentine’s Day!

  14. that is so cute and romantic! I love it when the house is decorated, it sure adds a lot to the whole mood. Valentine’s is a perfect way to bring in more romance in your lives, it might easily be lost somewhere. And with decor it is easier to set up the mood

  15. I love that you decorated for Valentine’s Day & I love that you used some items from Christmas like the tree & lights. It sounds like you had a lovely dinner & dessert with your husband & your dogs are so cute!
