Adventure Awaits Us At Home

Grease DIY Theme at Home as Sandy and Danny

Welcome to our Grease theme!  Today we will be sharing our version of “You’re the One That I Want” from the end of the movie.

It was June 2020, and we were still adjusting to the new normal of staying home. Fortunately, by then the weather was nice, and we could spend more time outside. But, it wasn’t quite pool weather yet so we were still keeping busy with our themes.

One night I heard a commercial that a sing along version of Grease would be airing soon. So, since I have always loved Grease, I thought hey there’s an idea! Since this was still early on for our themes, I tended to look for themes that did not require a lot of creativity. Because, as I have said before, creativity is not my strong suit! Although I have improved.

Those that have been here before know that typically we have themed meals and decorations to go along with our couples costumes. But, for this one, I did not plan a special meal, and we only had two props. This was more about having fun, enjoying the music, and dancing!

Those that haven’t been here before, you can check out our About Page to see why we started this blog. Also feel free to browse our other Blogs for more of our DIY themes.

Speaking of the dancing, at that time I had no idea we would have a YouTube channel. So we did not take any videos. However, you gotta love the iPhone and live photos. I went back through the 100s (x4 😊) of pictures and watched the live photos. At the time of our theme, I only went through the still photos. So, it was fun to see in action.

You can see the live photos in our YouTube video here.

Costumes

Danny Zuko

Danny was very easy to pull together for my husband. I chose to leave out the white letterman’s sweater. So, he wore his black jeans and black shoes. We only had to order him the black sleeveless t-shirt from Amazon.

Sandy Olsson

Although I have seen this movie several times, I had no idea what Sandy’s last name was! Am I the only one that thinks of her just as Sandy or Sandra Dee?

Anyway, Sandy’s costume was totally out of my comfort zone. But, I was more comfortable knowing I was just in our backyard. While I understand that seems funny to say since I knew at the time that I would post the pictures on social media. However, I have always kept my social media circle small. I knew everyone on my list. To me, that’s very different than wearing in person around a bunch of strangers.

That is not to say that I am shy, because I am far from that. I am just conservative in my attire. This, along with our other themes, has helped break me out of my shell in that sense. Albeit mostly only for our themes at home. But that’s a start!

Now here I am sharing it with strangers. Who would have thought? Regardless, I still do not know that I would wear this in public!

I had to buy everything for this costume, except the jacket, see above that I am a conservative dresser 😊.

Everything was from Amazon. For her shirt, I wore this black off shoulder top, then, I wore these faux leather high waisted leggings. I even had to buy the shoes! But now I have these cute dark cherry patent heeled sandals to wear with other outfits!

The sunglasses are not part of Sandy’s official costume.  That was just for regular pictures and not part of the reenactment.

Needless to say, my husband’s reaction was similar to Danny’s when he saw Sandy for the first time!

Hair & Makeup

Since Sandy’s hair is much shorter, I attempted to at least mimic her curly hair.  I used a very small curling iron wan, took thin strands and curled tightly in different directions.  Oh and lots and lots of hairspray!  This is not something to do when in a hurry!

It didn’t quite match the Sandy hair but it certainly was curly.

Sandy was the first of my blond characters.  I looked at wigs, but I didn’t like any of them.  So I was a brunette Sandy.

As for the makeup, red lipstick was a must.

Props

Last but not least, the props. To me, the Grease car and the cigarette were just as important as the costumes.

The car: I looked around and found a digital photo on Etsy. I then took it to a local printer and they printed the largest they could. My husband then cut it out, glued it to cardboard and then made it stationery with wood pieces. Isn’t the best!

The cigarette: My husband took a pencil and wrapped paper around it to make it sturdy. The eraser was the flame. Isn’t he clever?

You're The One That I Want

Now for the reenactment!

Sandy just arrived.

Sandy??

Tell me about it, stud!

I’ve got chills,
they’re multiplying
And I’m losing control

Cause the power your supplying

It’s electrifying!

You better shape up

Cause I need a man

And my heart is set on you.

You better understand
To my heart I must be true

Nothing left for me to do

You’re the one that I want, oh honey, you’re the one that I want

Next they continue to the the funhouse scene.  Same song, sing along! You’re the one that I want, the one that I need, oh yes indeed!

One last note, I have to tell you that my husband watched this scene of the movie several times in order to prepare. Once again, is he the best or what?
