Adventure Awaits Us At Home

Roaring 20s Theme at Home

20s

This is where it all began…ok well it is where the costume ideas started during the pandemic shutdown! We planned on going to a 20s event, but of course, that wasn’t happening. So what did we do? We brought the Roaring 20s to us. I planned this but then other theme ideas came about prior to this date so we ended up doing a few others prior to this one. Some with costumes some without. Stay tuned! But the idea of costumes came from this theme.

We had most of our costume pieces from Halloween a few years ago with a few additions (for me, imagine that!). This was a fun look with a cute flapper dress, headpiece and accessories for me. My husband wore black pants, a black vest, red shirt and black tie and a gangster hat. So this was an easy theme to pull together for minimal cost for both of us.

As I did my research about 1920s makeup, I learned that in the 20s, eyes were a very dark, smokey look and almost messy. Some referred to it as looking like your makeup was done the day before and you never removed it.

My eyes are my attempt at a smokey 20s eye look with my favorite Mary Kay purple and silver eye colors, liquid eyeliner, and lash intensity mascara. Also, lips were bold, so I went with a red, using Mary Kay spice & nice lip color. Even though I already have dark eyebrows, I added black eyeliner for the 20s eyebrow look because that was big back then. But, not my best look with these eyebrows!

I also attempted to curl my hair in a 20s style with large curls. As I looked for the sample of a photo I used, I realized today that it had an instructional how-to. Too bad I didn’t see that at the time! Here’s the link

I thought this theme worked well with some black and white photos.

We had a simple display of black, red and gold decor with things we generally had at home: gold champagne glasses and champagne, different color pearls, feathers and gold bowls. We had the 2020 glasses left over from New Year’s Eve so I figured why not! To add to the table, I printed two 20s themed signs and framed. So this was an easy addition and at no cost!

When we  do a theme outside, I usually stage it inside so that I know how it will look or if I need anything since I can’t leave it outside ahead of time. So this is the staging and the day of the the theme.

To add to our date nights at home, we typically add a themed dinner.  Cocktail shrimp served in martini glasses is a popular 20s themed food idea. Since we enjoy shrimp, we had that with non-themed red potatoes and salad. Simple yet tasty meal.

  1. Omg I love everything about this! As soon as I saw this, I thought, “This is so something I would do!” I’m a huge Downton Abbey fan so the 20’s have a special place in my heart.

  2. Love the costumes! Sometimes it’s fun to get lost in a different place and time. You guys sure know how to have fun and be creative.
