Adventure Awaits Us At Home

Tinker Bell & Captain Hook (Peter Pan Theme)

Hello and welcome to our Peter Pan Halloween theme at home. We did two themes at home for Halloween in 2021. Today we are sharing our Tinker Bell and Captain Hook couples costume theme.

Click here to check out our YouTube video too!

As we considered this theme, I just couldn’t picture my husband as Peter Pan. So, I decided the theme wasn’t going to work. But, when I mentioned it to him, it was his idea to be Captain Hook! I am so very fortunate that he not only participates willingly when we do the themes, but that he also helps me think through scenarios. I love that he jumps right into character!  Because he’s the best!

Now on to Never Never Land!

If you have seen our other themes, you will know that we tend to put our own spin on the costumes. Once again, it was fun recreating our costumes. First, we have Tinker Bell. This was easy because all you really need is a green dress and fairy wings! As you can see, I chose to wear silver heels, but any shoes would work. I also chose to be a more modern Tinker Bell!

Because I prefer my hair down, and I didn’t want her traditional bun, I left a thick strand down on one side.  Also, no bangs for me! As a matter of fact, no blond hair either! But I did add quite a bit of sparkle because .. why not!  As Tinker Bell says “leave a little sparkle everywhere you go!”

Once again making it my own, I used shimmery green and gold eye colors, lots of blush and Mary Kay spice and nice red lip color with my favorite Mary Kay lash intensity mascara. Also, I had slight winged eyes. But, I really struggled with this. After many hours and many tutorials, finally I found one that worked.  Here’s the link.

Next we have Captain Hook. Now he required a little more to pull him together. Fortunately, we had a lot of the costume from other themes. Most importantly, the pieces that pull it all together are the elegant red coat, black wig, handlebar mustache (that I did a not-so-great job drawing), feathered pirate hat and of course a hook. My amazing husband pulled it off well! He’s such a good sport! But did you have any doubt?

Now on to the decorations. We’ll start with Tinker Bell. When researching how to decorate for her, I found that it is really all about purples and greens and flowers and balloons. And of course, fairy wings! So I gathered what I could with this in mind. Once again, we had most of what I needed to make this fairy garden. But, I did make a quick stop at the dollar store for the wings! As always, I had a vision but as is typical, my vision and the result are never the same. However, it all came together in the end.

Now let’s talk about the balloon arch. This is my first time ever making one. Since I had no idea how I was going to incorporate balloons, I was looking for ideas. Of course, I pushed the idea of an arch aside because I thought this was too creative for me. But, then I watched a few videos and decided why not try it. I was surprised how easy it was. To be sure, it was time consuming. But, for me, what isn’t when it comes to creativity!  Here’s the helpful link for the video I followed.

Then we have the Captain Hook section. It’s basically just a simple pirate theme with common pirate items that we had from our Pirates of the Caribbean theme the prior Halloween. Because I like the reds and blacks and lots of candles, I repeated that also, this time to give it a little bit of a haunted feel.

Now I needed to pull our two characters together for our dinner and what better way than with Peter Pan! The table was set with green, beige and red for the Peter Pan colors. And of course we can’t forget red feathers to connect it all. Although it hardly compares This was adapted from The Rose Table.

A little side note, I also found this cool sign that says Adventure Awaits.  Interestingly, this theme is what put the idea of blog into my head.  Once I decided to do it, this sign came to mind and that was the inspiration for the name.

Next, dinner! As I thought about what do make, I wanted to include both Tinker Bell and Captain Hook. So, for our entrée we had Seafarers Newburgh (adapted from allrecipes.).  Conveniently, the recipe included tater tots so I thought why not shape like an anchor! I modified as followed:  I used large raw shrimp and doubled the sauce (this yielded much more sauce than needed).  For the sauce, instead of cream of chicken soup, I used one cream of mushroom and one cream of shrimp then added sautéed scallions and fresh garlic.  Yum!

We also had “toad stools” (adapted from Cup of Sugar Pinch of Salt) along with sword crescent rolls and butterfly butter. For these, I used a cookie cutter to make the shapes.

Lastly, dessert was a rum cake! Warning: it looks nothing like the picture in the recipe. It wasn’t pretty! But it was so delicious (adapted from Food & Wine).  As anyone can plainly see, I am not a baker!

This was my first time making both the seafood and the cake.  We really enjoyed both.

By night
